Symptoms of type 2 diabetes can include:

  • Sores that are slow to heal 
  • Patches of darkened skin

Type 2 diabetes occurs when a person has blood glucose (sugar) levels that are higher than normal because their body does not use insulin properly. It can also occur when the pancreas stops producing enough insulin.

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes can include being overweight, body fat distribution, lack of physical activity, family history, race, untreated prediabetes, gestational diabetes (diabetes developed while pregnant), and polycystic ovarian syndrome in women.
