From an early age, Kris Freeman dreamed of becoming an Olympic athlete. He was skiing from the time he could walk, and at age 19, was training with the Olympic Cross-Country Ski Team. But a routine blood test shortly thereafter led to a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.
When the doctors told Kris he’d have to stop skiing, he refused to give up on his goal. Instead, he began researching new tools to manage his diabetes better and discovered continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).
Using the Dexcom G5® Mobile CGM system, helped Kris better manage his diabetes by keeping him more informed about his glucose trends. With this information, he was able to spend more time in the snow. In fact, after nearly 200 races, only two have been affected by hypoglycemia.
With a combination of CGM, a stringent training regimen and a lot of heart, Kris has become a 16-time national champion and a 4-time Olympian in cross-country skiing. He also helps inspire the next generation of Dexcom Warriors by sharing his story with kids at more than 100 diabetes camps.
