What is a fasting blood sugar or fasting glucose level?

Fasting blood glucose (sugar) level refers to your blood sugar levels when you don’t have any food in your stomach for at least eight hours. For example, your fasting blood glucose might be measured when you wake up after a night of sleep. The Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines recommend that a healthy fasting blood glucose target for most people living with diabetes is a range between 4.0 and 7.0 mmol/L.
