How to replace your Dexcom sensor and start a new sensor session

Dexcom CGM systems are designed to deliver accurate glucose readings for up to 10 days. To maintain performance, follow these steps when replacing your sensor.

When to Replace Your Sensor

  • You’ll receive alerts from your Dexcom app or receiver before the session ends 24 hours, 6 hours, 2 hours, and 30 minutes before expiry.
    Dexcom G6 / Dexcom ONE - The session ends exactly 10 days after it was started.
    Dexcom G7 / Dexcom ONE+ last for 10 days plus a 12-hour grace period.

What You Need

  • A new Dexcom sensor  (specific to your system).
  • Your Dexcom transmitter (if your system has a separate transmitter).
  • The Dexcom app or receiver.
  • Something to clean both the old and new site.

Dexcom G7 and Dexcom ONE+

Step 1: Remove the Used Sensor

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Peel off over patch if separate.
  3. Peel off the old sensor patch from the edge like a plaster.

Step 2: Start a New Sensor Session

When the session ends, follow the onscreen instructions to start a new sensor session.
If you want to end the session early or during the grace period
1. On the app - Go to Connections, then sensor in the Dexcom app
On the Receiver - Go to Menu
2. Tap either
  • REPLACE SENSOR: To start a new sensor immediately
  • STOP SENSOR SESSION: To stop this sensor without starting a new one

Dexcom G6 and Dexcom ONE

Step 1: Remove the Used Sensor

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Peel off over patch if separate.
  3. Follow instructions below.

Step 2: Start a new sensor session

When the session ends, an on-screen message will tell you your sensor session has ended. Press OK and follow the prompts.

If you want to end the sensor session early

  1. Go to Settings in the Dexcom app.
    Go to Menu in the Receiver.
  2. Tap Stop / Replace Sensor  → Confirm.
  3. Tap Start New Sensor and follow the prompts.

General Advice

  • If the app doesn’t detect a new sensor, wait at least 5 minutes after stopping the previous session before inserting a new one.
  • Insert the new sensor and start the session straight away.
  • If the sensor fails on deployment or during warm-up, check for:
    • Incorrect insertion
    • Compression
    • Rapid glucose changes
    • Off-label insertion sites
