How to Obtain a Subsidised Dexcom G7 CGM Device
What is the process for obtaining a subsidised CGM?
Learn how to obtain a subsidised continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device in Australia. Follow our step-by-step guide to obtain a subsidised Dexcom G7 device.
National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS)
The first way to access the subsidised Dexcom G7 CGM is via the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS). The NDSS CGM Subsidy Initiative was first introduced in 2017 (to children and young adults only) followed by those with specific concession cards, children and young adults with conditions requiring insulin and those who are pregnant or actively planning pregnancy.
On 1 July 2022, the Australian Government then expanded access to subsidised continuous glucose monitoring systems for all eligible people with type 1 diabetes through the NDSS. This access is designed to help people living with diabetes:
- Reduce the number of severe hypoglycaemic events
- Improve glucose management in people with poor glycaemic awareness or suboptimal glycaemic control (maintaining blood glucose levels in the target range reduces the risks of developing diabetes-related complications)
- Reduce visits to emergency departments, and missed work and/or school days by helping eligible people and their families to manage their type 1 diabetes
- Reduce anxiety for eligible people living with type 1 diabetes.1
How to access the NDSS CGM Subsidy
There are four simple steps involved in obtaining a subsidised Dexcom G7 CGM device through the Australian CGM subsidy initiative. You must apply through the NDSS to obtain access to funding. The application process for subsidised CGM devices is outlined below.
Step 1 – Check the CGM subsidy initiative eligibility criteria
Step 2 – Complete your relevant CGM access form with your healthcare professional
Step 3 – NDSS will contact you to confirm your eligibility.
Step 4 – Your healthcare professional will contact you regarding the delivery of your Dexcom G7 CGM device

Department of Veterans’ Affairs
As of the 1st July 2023, eligible DVA clients will be able to access contracted diabetes products (e.g. subsidised Dexcom CGM). Clients can order their diabetes supplies directly through contracted suppliers (Aidacare, Allianz Global Assistance, The Country Care Group and BrightSky), rather than the previous process which saw clients contact DVA’s Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP), or obtain diabetes products via the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS).
Contracted diabetes products will be available for DVA clients who are Gold or White card holders (with diabetes as a DVA accepted condition).
In addition to Dexcom CGM being subsidised, a number of other AMSL Diabetes products are now listed as contracted items and can be ordered, fully funded, for eligible DVA clients:
- Tandem t:slim X2 Insulin pumps plus consumables (including accessories, cartridges and infusion sets)
- HypoPak Fast-Acting Glucose
We recommend speaking to your healthcare professional to see if this update is relevant to you and to discuss next steps in accessing funded products via this DVA scheme.
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE. Read the warnings available on dexcom.com/downloadsandguides and amsldiabetes.com.au/resources before purchasing. Consult your healthcare professional to see if this product is right for you.
