How to Purchase Dexcom Products with Reimbursement?

Q. What are the guidelines for reimbursement?
All endocrinologists, internists and pediatricians can prescribe Dexcom continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices for people with type 1 diabetes.1
As of January 1, 2025, reimbursement has been extended to type 2 diabetes patients who require rapid-acting insulin and need continuous glucose monitoring for their diabetes management.2
The Estonian Health Insurance Fund (Tervisekassa) covers 4 Dexcom ONE transmitters and/or 40 Dexcom ONE/Dexcom ONE+ sensors per year (41 sensors for those under 19 years old) over the course of a year at a 90% discount of the reference price, which is expected to cover their annual needs. 1
Q. Who can receive reimbursement?
Dexcom devices can be prescribed to individuals with type 1 diabetes from the age of 2 and as of January 1, 2025, also to type 2 diabetes patients who require rapid-acting insulin and require continuous glucose monitoring for their diabetes mangement.2
According to the "Non-Pharmacological Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes" guidelines1, insulin deficiency can be objectively determined using C-peptide levels. If the C-peptide level is below 200 pmol/L, the patient has significant insulin deficiency and typically requires both short- and long-acting insulin therapy, similar to type 1 diabetes patients.1
Type 2 diabetes patients on intensive insulin therapy should consult their treating physician to determine their C-peptide levels for prescription eligibility.
Q. When does reimbursement become available in Estonia?
