What is Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and How Does It Work?
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is a technology that automatically tracks your glucose (sugar) levels throughout the day and night. A small sensor is inserted just under the skin—usually on the abdomen or upper arm* —which measures glucose in the interstitial fluid. The sensor sends readings wirelessly to a display device, such as a compatible smartphone† or receiver, every few minutes.

What is a Glucose Sensor?
A glucose sensor is a tiny device that sits just under the skin and continuously measures glucose levels in the interstitial fluid (the fluid between cells). The sensor is part of a CGM system and sends glucose readings to your display device, helping you monitor your glucose trends and make informed treatment decisions.
What is the Difference Between CGM and BGM?
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and Blood Glucose Monitoring (BGM) are both used to measure glucose levels, but they work differently. CGM uses a sensor under the skin to provide continuous, real-time glucose readings and trends, while BGM requires fingerstick blood samples for single, point-in-time readings. CGM offers more comprehensive data, including alerts and trends, to help manage diabetes more proactively.

Why Might Dexcom CGM Sensor Glucose Values Differ from Blood Glucose Values (BGV)?
Dexcom CGM systems measure glucose in the interstitial fluid (the fluid between cells), while blood glucose meters (BGM) measure glucose in the blood. Because of this, CGM readings may differ slightly from fingerstick blood glucose values, especially when glucose levels are changing rapidly. Both provide valuable information, but CGM offers continuous trends and alerts.
