Diabetes Polar Flight: Douglas Cairns Flies to the North Pole

April 11, 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Douglas Cairns, a diabetic pilot, departs for the North Pole on April 17th, weather permitting. The focus will be on the solo speed record being set from Barrow, Alaska and the North Pole. While the landing is now aiming to be made at a Russian Ice Camp 60 miles from the Pole, Douglas will also cross the magnetic north pole which continues to drift 34 miles north west north each year towards Siberia (from Canada) and is currently 300 miles from the geographic north pole.
Previously, Douglas set the worlds speed record for landing in all 50 US states.
