Managing diabetes is challenging, and staying motivated and engaged is key to effectively managing the day-to-day challenges it brings. As part of the new Dexcom G7 app 2.9 update, we have introduced three new features designed to help you take a more active role in your diabetes care while making it as easy as possible.
With the new 7-day Glucose Management Indicator (GMI), you can quickly see how your daily efforts impact your glucose levels, so you feel supported with quick feedback and motivation. Enhancements to event logging features allow you to track and visualize how your lifestyle choices like meals and activity affect your glucose, making it easier to stay engaged and make informed decisions. The ability to customize your target glucose range further personalizes your experience, empowering you to set and achieve goals tailored to your unique needs.
These new features are all about helping you stay motivated, and helping you take better control of your diabetes management.

7-Day GMI: Know the direction you are heading1

A Glucose Management Indicator (GMI) is an approximate measure of a Dexcom user’s A1C based on average glucose measured by their Dexcom G7 CGM System. GMI is a great indicator of what your next A1C test result may be. Before now, GMI required a minimum of 14 days of data. With a recent update to the Dexcom G7 app, you can now get a GMI number in just seven days.
The new 7-Day GMI feature gives you a clearer picture of your overall glucose trends in less time, with a GMI value generated during the first sensor session. This can let you know sooner if you’re heading in the right direction. It can also motivate you to engage more with your Dexcom G7 to learn how food and activity choices affect your glucose so you can make adjustments in the moment, rather than waiting for your next A1C test.
Your GMI is displayed in the Clarity Card on the Glucose tab of your Dexcom G7 app. By staying updated on your GMI, you’ll feel more confident that your day-to-day efforts make a difference and see how your lifestyle choices directly impact your glycemic health.

Motivated photo event logging only available with Dexcom G7

Did you know you can log and track a wide variety of lifestyle “events” in the Dexcom G7 app? In the History tab, you can track several key types of events that happen throughout your day, including insulin doses, meals, activity, blood glucose meter values, and medications. You can even add short notes—in text and emojis—about other things that might affect your glucose.
By logging events, you can gain a more in-depth understanding of how the things you do throughout the day affect your glucose. This knowledge can also be quite motivating as you take a more active role in managing diabetes.
As part of the Dexcom G7 2.9 app release, we’ve made some further enhancements to event logging to make events more visual, faster to log,
and easier to understand. It may even replace the need for manual logbooks!

Photo Logging

A request we frequently receive from our users is the ability to add photos to their logged event. You can now make your event more visual with the new ability to add a photo to the event you log. Add a picture of your meal, the exercise you did, medication, or any other type of event. This helps provide additional context when looking back at a particular event.

Event Insights

Events Insights help take event logging to the next level. In the History tab, you can review logged events and see the glucose impact with a before/after trend graph, event details, and time stamps to better understand the “why” behind any glucose peaks and valleys.
For example:
  • If you log a meal, the logged event entry will populate a snapshot of what your glucose did from mealtime to three hours later, allowing you to see exactly what happened in your body over that three-hour period.
  • If you log an activity, the logged event entry will populate a snapshot of what your glucose did from start to end. If you went on a 60-minute run, you'll get a complete look at how your glucose changed throughout the duration of the exercise.

Smart Food Log

With Smart Food Log, you can take a photo of your food or upload it from the camera roll and AI will automatically identify the ingredients and populate the meal description. This helps remove some of the manual burden of logging a meal, making it faster and more efficient. You'll still need to manually log any notes, like carbs and date and time.
With these enhancements, you can enjoy an easier and less burdensome logging experience, while gaining a deeper understanding of your choices and habits so you can determine what works best for you.

Customizable target range

Diabetes is not a one-size-fits-all disease. One of the things that makes it so tricky is that depending upon food choices, activities, and stress levels, medications affect glucose levels differently from person to person.
The ADA recommendation for target glucose range is 70-180 mg/dL, and this is a great place to start for many. However, the preferred range for someone with type 1 diabetes may be different than the person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes.
Now you can set your own customized target glucose range in both the Dexcom G7 app and in Dexcom Clarity, allowing you to choose a target range better suited for your individual goals. Before adjusting your high and low thresholds, be sure to talk to your doctor and align on what's best and most realistic for you. You can even set a target range for daytime and nighttime within the Dexcom G7 app.
The benefits of Custom Target Ranges are many. Let's look at the big ones:
  • Tailored Treatment Plans: Customizable target ranges allow you user and your doctor to set individualized glucose targets based on your specific health needs. This feature is particularly helpful for pregnant patients, as the glycemic targets are much tighter than people who are not pregnant.2 In addition, someone who is actively engaged in their diabetes management may have slightly different targets than someone who is just starting off. The ability to customize the target range makes managing diabetes more personalized to your unique needs while making it simpler for your healthcare professional to interpret your data. This personalized approach ensures treatment plans align with your unique circumstances. As your treatment plan evolves, your target ranges can be adjusted accordingly. This flexibility allows for dynamic management that can respond to changes in your health status, medications, or lifestyle.
  • Clear Goals: When you have target ranges set specifically for you, it becomes easier to understand and engage with your glucose management. You know exactly what numbers you should aim for, which can help increase day-to-day motivation and encourage you to stick to your treatment plan.
  • Shared Decision-Making: The ability to customize your target range can help get you more involved and promote a sense of ownership and partnership in your care. This shared decision-making process can lead to greater satisfaction and trust in your treatment plan
The ability to customize target ranges in the Dexcom G7 app can help you take a more active role in managing your diabetes, with achievable goals that are unique to you. It also helps provide your healthcare professional with another tool to deliver high-quality, personalized care.
