What is a normal blood glucose level?

Normal or usual plasma blood glucose (sugar) levels range depending on the time of day, meals, and other factors. Using a chart like the one below can help you and your healthcare provider develop a program of regular blood glucose monitoring for diabetes management.
These are considered normal blood glucose ranges for people without diabetes and with diabetes:

  • Before breakfast (fasting) <100 mg/dL 70-130mg/dL
  • Before lunch, supper and snack <110 mg/dL 70-130 mg/dL
  • Two hours after meals <140 mg/dL <180 mg/dL
  • Bedtime <120 mg/dL 90-150 mg/dL
