Meet Derek Theler*

A lifelong struggle

Derek Theler has no memories of life without diabetes—at three years old, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (Juvenile diabetes). Growing up with this disease felt like a death sentence, but he vowed that diabetes wouldn’t prevent him from living the life he always wanted. In 2009, he began his career in acting and decided to use whatever fan base he gained to spread the word about diabetes research and new technology to children.

A challenging path

The life and career of a busy actor is ever-changing and makes it difficult to manage diabetes, especially with the constant traveling and going for long stretches of time without food. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) helps Derek make sure he’s in control at all times and in any kind of environment.

“I want to be a hero, a role model, to kids in particular. I want to inspire people and be part of causes that mean something to me.”

Derek’s eye-opening discovery

Using the Dexcom G6 CGM System helps Derek stay informed about his glucose trends and patterns. The alarm system in particular helps him out when he otherwise would be unaware of an extreme, dangerous low. In addition, the Share function1 allows his mother to keep tabs on his levels while he’s alone in LA, which is incredibly beneficial.

Finding success…and inspiring others

With a combination of CGM, dedication, and a strong spirit, Derek has earned roles in several TV series, including the Freeform comedy, Baby Daddy, and the web series Project Sara. He’s appeared in TV commercials for Coke, State Farm, Nike,, Arby’s, and Verizon.

“I want you to know you can live a long, healthy life even with diabetes. I’ve realized you only get one life, and the most important commodity is time.”
