Discover how recent improvements to G7 event logging, including Automated Activity Logging and New Medication Logging, can help connect the dots between lifestyle choices and your glucose monitoring log.
What is event logging and why is it helpful for glucose monitoring
Beyond the glucose level, trend arrow, and trend graph that show where your glucose is, where it’s heading and where
you’ve been, the Dexcom G7 App is full of other helpful features and capabilities that can help you get even more out of
your CGM experience.
For example, there is a whole host of CGM alerts that can help you spend more time in range1-5 and warn you in advance of dangerous lows (check out our article series on Alerts here). You can also use the Share and Follow* features to share your numbers with your loved ones and care team. But did you know you can also track lifestyle “events”?
In the History tab of the Dexcom G7 app, you can track several key “events” that happen throughout your day, including insulin doses, meals, activity, BG meter values, and medications.† You can even add short notes — in text and emojis — about other things that might affect your glucose.
As part of the recent G7 App 2.2 update, Dexcom made several key improvements to event logging to both expand the types of events you can log and make it easier to log those events.
What’s new with event logging:
NEW MEDICATION LOGGING†:
Dexcom G7 is the first and only CGM with Medication Logging.† It’s the newest addition to the “add events” function in the History tab of the G7 App. The medication logging feature pulls from a large library of both non-diabetes medications and diabetes medications, including GLP-1’s.
Medication logging allows you and your doctor to track and understand how your medications affect your glucose over time.
This can be helpful as you and your healthcare provider optimize your individual treatment plan.
This can be helpful as you and your healthcare provider optimize your individual treatment plan.
When logging a medication, you can quickly and easily input the medication, date, time, dosage and even jot down a note to yourself that you feel is important about the event.
The logged medication will appear in both the history tab of your G7 app and as an icon on your trend graph on the glucose tab of the G7 app. These events are also pulled into your Clarity report for your doctor’s easy viewing.
AUTOMATED ACTIVITY LOGGING†:
Your daily activity is a key part of any diabetes management plan. Physical activity is one of the most powerful ways we can influence our glucose levels. By logging your activity in the G7 App, you can see how your activity throughout the day impacted your glucose, helping you build a deeper understanding of the relationship between your physical activity and your glucose control.
Automated Activity logging is a new and easier way to get data from other activity tracking apps and devices into the Dexcom G7 app through the connection to Apple Health (iPhone‡ users) or Google Health Connect (Android‡ Users).
Automated activity logging seamlessly pulls activity data from Apple Health or Health Connect into the Dexcom G7 app for easy tracking.§ This reduces the need to manually track every activity done throughout the day.
Once connected, in addition to workout events:
- iOS users will see their display steps, Active minutes and active energy in the History tab of the G7 app.
- Android users will see their daily steps in the History tab.
Both iOS and Android users will see activity data from devices paired with Health Connect and Apple Health (like fitness trackers) on the landscape view of your G7 trend graph and in the History tab.
To connect the Dexcom G7 app to either to Apple Heath or Health Connect, simply navigate to the connections tab of the Dexcom G7 app tap “Apple Health” or “Health Connect” and follow the on-screen prompts.
SIMPLIFIED MEAL LOGGING†:
Meal logging has been a part of event logging function in the Dexcom G7 app since it launched in 2023, but Dexcom has made some experience improvements as part of the v2.2 app update.
The first thing users will notice is a new description field, which allows you to write a brief description of your entire meal. This is helpful because there are many variables that affect how a certain food affects your glucose at a given moment.
For example, a particular serving of carbs may peak glucose levels after eating differently depending on the time of day or other foods eaten with it. When a meal is viewed in its entirety, you can build a deeper understanding of how your body responds to food within the context it was eaten, which can help inform future decisions you make at mealtimes.
Next, the carb field is now optional. Sometimes it can be difficult to accurately calculate the exact amount of carbs in a meal, especially when eating out at a restaurant. Now that this field is optional, you can better log your meals without having to provide a guess as to how many grams of carbs were in your meal.
Logging events can be another helpful tool when using Dexcom G7 to manage diabetes.
Automated activity, simplified meal and new medication logging† connects the dots between your activity, food, and medications and your glucose in real-time, which can help empower easier decisions and lead to better glucose control.
How to log events in the Dexcom G7 App:
Logging events in the Dexcom G7 App is simple.
To add an event:
- Tap + in the top right of the Glucose or History tabs in your G7 App.
- Tap the event you want to add
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
Once logged, the entry will appear in the history tab and on the trend graph of your glucose tab when your phone is turned horizontally or landscape view.
